A passage in Roland Huntford's "The Last Place on Earth" quotes a letter from Amundsen to Alexander Nansen (brother of Norwegian explorer Fridtjof Nansen) in which Amundsen describes this appearance as "...a cold douche at my first lecture. 2 to 300 people were all that were present in Carnegie Hall, which can hold as many thousands."
