According to the New York Times, C. Scott McBride, General Superintendant of the Anti-Saloon League, read the opening part of Wayne B. Wheeler's statement "so that Mr. Wheeler, who had a cold, could save his voice for the rebuttal of his opponent's arguments." The article also notes that Mayor James J. Walker, the Honorary Chairman for the event, was late, so the debate began without him; he arrived shortly after 9 PM.
