- Title: Perelman American Roots: African American Song: Uniting Voices
Perelman American Roots, a program of the Weill Music Institute at Carnegie Hall, integrates arts and humanities learning into social-studies and music classrooms through active, personal, and musical exploration of American vernacular music. The program has four main objectives: 1) to teach students how groups of people address human concerns, historical perspectives, and social conditions through musical performance; 2) to inspire students to look into their own lives and worlds for ways to connect to the musical traditions of the US throughout history; 3) to engage with American repertoire and bolster students' understanding of a music's historical context through the use of skills-based learning materials in choral classrooms; and 4) to support cross-disciplinary collaborations within a school environment by addressing the connections between music and the social sciences. Participating teachers took part in two Professional Development Workshops, and each class received a standards- and lesson-based curriculum.
