- General John Brown Gordon commanded the 2nd Corps of the Army of Northern Virginia under Gen. Robert E. Lee, and was one of four Confederate generals present when Lee surrendured to Gen. Ulysses S. Grant at Appomatox Court House in 1865.
Present on stage was Joshua Chamberlain (1828-1914), general in the Union Army during the Civil War and Governor of Maine, 1867-71, to whom General Gordon officially surrendered his Confederate troops on April 12, 1861.
