"The First Hundred Thousand" is the title of a book based on the experiences of Ian Hay (pen name of John Hay Beith) as an officer in a K1 battalion of the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders. The title refers to the first 100,000 volunteers recruited by British Secretary of State for War, Horatio Kitchener, at the outbreak of hostilities in World War I; they were known as Kitchener's Army or K1.
