Simon Barere collapsed on the keyboard during the first movement of the Grieg Concerto; he fell on the floor, and died backstage. The cause of death was a cerebral hemorrhage. Set Svanholm came on to sing the Rangstroem songs, but the concert was cancelled after the intermission, when an announcement about Barere's death was made from the stage. The Nielsen Symphony No. 5, Op. 50, which would have been a New York Premiere, was not performed.
