  • Prepared by Lukas Foss in conjunction with the Center of the Creative and Performing Arts in the State University of New York at Buffalo Jon Hassell's work is listed in the printed concert program as "on display: map, a lobby piece by jon hassell". An note explains (in part), "MAP is one of a series of designs in which a sound composition and a physical form are merged. An area of magnetic material is saturated with audio signals of various types (electronic, "natural" sounds, voices, etc.). A magnetic playback head is moved over the surface by hand. The "code" of magnetic recording allows the speed and motion of this "reading" to alter the sound in a way impossible in its uncoded form. The discovery of new continents and seas, peaks and valleys of amplitude, etc. is open to each participant."
